New house, new locks – why is it so important?

A staggering 58% of people don't change  their locks when they move.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving into your new home, but some attention does need to be paid to the security side of things. Especially as a number of people have had access to your keys that may still be in circulation. Therefore, it’s worth confirming with your estate agent that all keys to your property are in your possession on completion.

As soon as you can, instruct a local locksmith to change all your locks. You’ve invested a considerable sum of money into your new property so you owe it to yourself to make it safe and secure. The better the lock the harder it will be for anyone to break in. Spending a few extra pounds on your security will serve you well down the line.

It’s a good idea to do your research ahead and store a locksmith’s number in your phone so it’s easy to make that call and get your home security underway. Don’t just pick the first company you find on Google, always try and get a recommendation. A good locksmith won’t just change your locks, they’ll give you expert advice and recommendations as part of their service too.
Replacing locks doesn’t just stop at front and back doors. They include garages, sheds, side gates and window locks. Put simply; any access point a burglar can enter your premises.

There is also your home insurance to consider. Did you know that if you were to be broken into and your possessions are damaged or stolen, your insurance claim may be void? Some insurance companies state that if you have not changed your locks when moving house, then you haven’t done enough to secure your property and prevent a burglary. It’s an important aspect to highlight as few people are aware of the consequences.

Being burgled is not something anyone wants to experience. Aside from the loss of personal property, there's the emotional impact of knowing that someone has been in your home without permission, violating your personal space and dealing with that often takes longer than the insurance claim process.

Faulty locks and handles need immediate attention too. Maybe you’ve noticed your door handle is loose or your lock is quite stiff to open? Don’t ignore this, take action as soon as you move in. Before the problem gets worse, and you incur extra expense. These faults are easily fixed and at minimal cost, depending on the locksmith you choose.

Moving over the winter months feels safer from a security aspect, but the summer months will soon be upon us. Warmer days and nights often mean we've got doors and windows open more than usual, and we spend more time in the garden meaning we can get complacent. Therefore, if you change your locks as soon as you move in, you can be safe in the knowledge your home is secure for the year ahead.
